History and watermelon
1948: The State of Israel is created and the Arab-Israeli War begins, an event Palestinians refer to as the "Nakba" ("catastrophe"), marking the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and the beginning of their struggle to preserve their national identity.
After the 1967 war, when Israel took control of the West Bank and Gaza, displaying the Palestinian flag was restricted in certain contexts. Faced with these restrictions, artists, activists, and Palestinians began using watermelon as a symbol of their national identity.
Over the years, watermelon has become a discreet way to express attachment to Palestine. In 2023, this symbol saw a resurgence in international popularity, becoming a globally recognized sign of solidarity.
Today, watermelon no longer just represents the colors of the Palestinian flag. It embodies the resistance, identity, memory, resilience, and hope of a people, making it a cultural and political symbol deeply rooted in the history of Palestine.
